Warren Elliott Thompson

October 23, 1934 ~ June 5, 2023 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Obituary

A devoted husband, and lifelong farmer who cared deeply about living in harmony with his land and the beloved wildlife. A loyal friend who enjoyed visitors at the end of a day’s chores, and on many days right in the middle of chores, with lively discussion about recent news, American and local history, farming and wildlife. A “Father of the heart” to many, with sincere interest and support for “his kids” who either came to work or simply learn things at his farm.

Warren Elliott Thompson of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, died Monday June 5th of natural causes. He is survived by Margaret Ann (Gayer) Thompson, his loving wife. Warren was preceded in death by his parents Elwood and Mildred (Unsworth) Thompson, and was the seventh born of their eight sons (brothers Elwood, Jr, Wendell, Benjamin, Washington, Corben, Glenn and Jerry). Warren grew up on a family farm on Brown Station Road (Prince George’s County), and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Economics. He enlisted in the Army and after his tour of duty he remained active in the Army reserve in Maryland for many years.

He “settled” with his wife Margaret at their farm on Mt Calvert Road (Croom), and became an accomplished Horseman where he owned/managed an equestrian stable with indoor and outdoor riding rings, pastures and paddocks, hay fields and beautiful woods with abundant wildlife. He was kind and protective of those he loved, with genuine interest in his neighbors and many loyal friends who were fortunate enough to know him.

He had exceptional knowledge of American history (especially the Presidents, their lives and accomplishments), and loved to teach others by engaging with them in witty discussions that he frequently laced with his wonderful sense of humor. He was a passionate animal lover, both wild and domestic, and a lifelong student of the behavior of all creatures great and small. He was honest, unless there was a tale to tell and you had to verify it with Margaret for the true version! He was a published poetry author - “Patuxent Days” 1995 (‘tho he would never admit who he based his characters on!).
