Mike M. Millan, 93, of Owings, MD died in Annapolis on December 25, 2011.

Mike was born “Mike Monchlovich” in Franklin Borough, Johnstown, PA, to George and Anie  Kresomitch Monchlovich on Jan. 24, 1918.  On April 2, 1943, he married the former Doris June Ormsby of Laurinburg, NC.

 

Athletics, specifically football, was Mike’s path out of the Pennsylvania coal mines to the halls of George Washington University. His education was interrupted by his service in World War II. First Lieutenant Millan was the recipient of two Silver Star Medals, a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart while serving with the 405th Infantry Division, United States Army in Holland, France and Germany

 

When he returned military service, he was actively recruited by several professional football teams. Foregoing a career as a football player, he continued with his education completing a Masters in Education from George Washington University. Ultimately, he completed a 30-year career as teacher, coach and athletic director for a number of schools in the Northern Virginia area. 

 

After retiring from Fairfax County Public Schools, Mike remained active as a referee and volunteer at many high school sporting events. Mike enjoyed spending time with family and friends whether golfing (ever working to perfect his game), fishing, playing cards or sharing a meal. Over the past several years, Mike had been an active participant and general best friend of those visiting the North Beach Senior Center.

 

He is survived by his sons, Michael Millan of Santa Barbara, CA and John Millan and wife Gail of Beverly Hills, CA; daughter, Susan Millan of Seattle, WA; four grandchildren, Katherine Peele, Caitlin Millan, Mackenzie Millan, and Natalie Millan;  one great-grandchild, August Rowell and son-in-law, Robert Dalke. His parents, his wife  of 64 years, Doris and daughter, Anne Dalke predeceased him.

 

A memorial service was held at Springfield United Methodist Church on Jan. 10, 2012.
