Florence Patricia “Patsy” (Jones) Ramsey, 86, passed away quietly at home on December 11, 2024. Patsy was a devoted wife, mother of 5, grandmother to 8, great grand mother of 26 and had four great-great grandchildren. She had a large family and her family was her absolute passion. She was a Christmas baby, born on December 22, 1937 in Easton, MD. The daughter to Ruth and Lawrence (Doc) Jones, she spent most of her young life living in the small eastern shore town of Denton, MD. She lost her father as a young girl and honed her mothering skills early by helping to care for her two younger brothers, Larry and Paul.
She was a tomboy growing up, perhaps so she could stay ahead of her two brothers. She then channeled that energy by excelling at sports in high school. She was a competitive basketball and softball player, way before it was popular for girls to play sports. A good but slightly defiant student, she was once sent home for showing up with curlers in her hair. She graduated Caroline County High School in 1955. At 17 she got a job as a waitress at the Corner Restaurant in Denton, There she met Lee Ramsey, the love of her life. They married on May 13, 1955 and were together, side by side, hand in hand for 69 years.
Patsy settled into married life, first in Denton then moving closer to Washington DC so Lee could get a better job. Soon they had a parcel of kids, Patricia Lee, Gary Allan, Robin Kay, Michael Earl and Laurie Ann. Her entire life revolved around family and how she could help or make their lives better. Over the years, she would “adopt” many of her kids friends and make them part of the extended Ramsey clan. And every summer she hosted a group of younger male relations who would spend their summer breaks working with Lee to make extra money. Brothers, nephews, cousins, everyone was welcomed, mothered and fed.
A car accident in 1963 almost took her life but she fought for months and managed to survive. Left with permanent scars and lifelong medical issues, she never complained because she felt she had been given a second chance at life. When her youngest started school, she took computer classes so she could get a job to help make a better life for her family. Her second job was with Giant Food where she worked in their computer department starting as a keypunch operator and working her way up to department supervisor. She retired from Giant after 30 years of service. Once she started working and making a little extra money she wanted to travel, always with her family.
Her absolute favorite destinations were Disney theme parks; Disney World in Florida, Disney Land in California and Disney Paris. A chance meeting with Mickey, Minnie or any costumed character would bring the biggest smile to her face. She enjoyed the parks more than any five year old child. After retirement she loved reading Guideposts inspirational books. And she absolutely loved the Christmas holiday. Countless hours were spent decorating her home and shopping for the perfect gift for each member of the family. Anyone who met Patsy immediately loved her and became her friend because she clearly and genuinely cared about people and their lives. She was the definition of pure love and selflessness and will be missed more than words can express.
Patsy is survived by her husband Lee; her five children, Patricia and her husband John of Owings, MD; Gary and his wife Barbara of Waldorf, MD; Kay and her husband Allen of Fort McCoy, FL; Mike and his wife Tracy of Remington, VA and Laurie and her husband James of North Beach, MD. She is also survived by all 30 of her grand, great and great-great-grand children.
