Elizabeth Scott Moore Obituary
Elizabeth Scott Moore, 101, died peacefully of natural causes on June 6, 2013 at the BrightView Assisted Living in Edgewater, MD, near Annapolis, MD.
Elizabeth (Betty) Buccleuch Scott was born at “Pine Lea”, her family home in Dedham, MA on April 23, 1912 to Mabel Kates Scott and Arnold Scott. Betty spent her formative years in Boston, MA, living in the Back Bay area and at her parent’s summer home in Salter’s Point, MA. As a young girl, she traveled with her parents, going on several extended trips to Europe and North Africa. In 1926, Betty spent a year at Mlle LeBoucher’s School in Paris. After graduating from Miss May’s school in Boston in 1930, she came out during the Boston Fall and winter season. She graduated from Smith College in the spring of 1935 with a BA in History of Art. During this time Betty traveled with her mother to Alexandria, Cairo, Aswan, and Sudan. Later, they traveled to the Far East that took them to the Philippines, Hong Kong, China, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan, then back home through Honolulu and Vancouver, Canada.
In 1931, Betty moved with her mother to St. Davids, PA. On June 7, 1941 Betty married Springer Harbaugh Moore, Jr. at the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, PA. Springer served as an officer in the Navy during World War II and returned to the Main Line, settling in Haverford, PA and later Wynnewood, PA. Springer resumed his admiralty law practice in Philadelphia and Betty raised a family and did volunteer work with the Junior League, Church of the Redeemer, Bryn Mawr Hospital Thrift Shop and the Haverford School.
In 1962, Springer and Betty moved to Vero Beach, FL. where she opened and ran the Waverley Book Shop until 1977. At the time it was considered to have had the largest selection of books between Miami and Charleston, SC.
After 51 years of marriage, Springer died in 1992. Betty continued to live in her home in Vero Beach until September 2004 when extensive damage from Hurricanes Francis and Jean forced her to evacuate and move in with her daughter, Teeja, in Springfield, VA. With sadness she realized she could not return to Vero Beach and sold her home in February 2005. In March 2005, Betty moved into The Virginian, an independent living apartment, in Fairfax, VA. In June 2012, Betty moved to Edgewater, MD to be closer to Teeja.
Betty is survived by a son, Springer Harbaugh (Harb) Moore, III of Hoover, AL; a daughter, Patricia (Teeja) Moore Meier of Huntingtown, MD; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Harbaugh Moore Konig, Amanda Springer Moore Smith, Alexander Scott Manan, Paul Emile Manan; and two great grandchildren.
