Mae Earlene Johnson, 79, of Calvert County, MD, passed away peacefully at The Charleston Senior Community in Waldorf, MD on March 12, 2024. Earlene was born on June 30, 1944, in La Plata, MD to Nona Ruth McGinnas. Earlene recently learned her biological father was Earl Wade Gregory. Earlene was married twice, first to Earl Berry and later to Howard Hickman.
Earlene worked as a Registered Nurse first at Southern Maryland Hospital, then Calvert Memorial Hospital, and later at Carolina Pines Hospital in South Carolina, where she retired. Earlene moved to SC in 2001 where she bred and sold Cocker Spaniel puppies. Her love for animals included raising chickens, horses, dogs (especially her beloved Daisy), cats, goats, and cows. She was also an active member of Emmanuel Christian Church in Hartsville, SC before moving back to Maryland.
She enjoyed going to yard sales, spending time with her family, the water, and eating crabs. She loved joking around, especially with her son-in-law, Roy. He always put a smile on her face! Earlene was a part of the Foster Care system and fostered many children in Maryland. Friends remember her as a mentor for foster care, and she was known for her compassion. She had the biggest heart when it came to children, animals, and her family.
In addition to her parents, Earlene is preceded in death by her sister, Karen Bryceland; brother, Danny Johnson; daughter, Sharyn Berry; son, Mark Berry; and two grandchildren, Erica and JD. Earlene is survived by her sister, Annette Welchel; brother Jimmy Gregory; children, Debbie Gibson (Roy), Ruth Humphreys (Shannon), Dawn Berry, Tina Berry, James Berry, Michael Hickman (Christina), Victoria Johnson, Taylor Huffman (Thomas), Kae Last, Katelyn Fishburn (Logan), Jessica Ramirez (Jose), Alexus Johnson, Aron Johnson, Austin Johnson (Mataia), and Julie Johnson; 32 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to The Charleston Senior Community and Hospice of the Chesapeake for their compassion and care.
